In 2000, American Girl released Kit Kittredge as the seventh character in the Historical Characters line. Her story took place in the Great Depression and she was the first new Historical Character to be released after Mattel took over the American Girl company. In 2008, American Girl released Kit Kittredge: An American Girl movie which was a movie based on Kit's story to movie theaters across the United States. To celebrate the release, American Girl came out with items seen in the movie. In 2014, Kit was a part of the Historical Character relaunch to BeForever. Kit was given a new meet outfit, a resigned book series, and an updated collection. In 2019, American Girl decided to cubed Kit. Leading up to this, several items from her collection were retired. In 2023, American Girl reintroduced Kit with a couple of items from her original collection in honor of Kit's 100th birthday. This Kit came in the original meet outfit, original meet accessories, and a reprint of the Meet Kit book which included a special introduction from the author. This special collection was while supplies last and came in original packaging.

Kit was originally going to have another outfit be her original meet outfit. Still, American Girl decided last minute to change it due to the straw hat falling apart (see side photo).
