TRULY ME

In 1995, American Girl released American Girl of Today, now known as Truly Me. American Girl launched with 20 different dolls, several outfits, and accessories. Each doll was dressed in the same meet outfit and came with a set of six blank boots with writing guides by Valerie Tripp. This encouraged and guided people to make up a storyline for their dolls. The whole purpose of the American Girl of Today line was to encourage people to create their own characters.
The Truly Me line has gone under many different rebrandings throughout the years. With each rebrand and rename, the truly me dolls received a new meet outfit, meet accessories, and offerings. However, the Truly Me dolls have received new meet outfits, accessories, and offerings without a rename and rebrand. In 1998, Pleasant Company slightly changed the name to American Girl Today and the dolls only came with one blank book with a writing guide. This also marked the American Girl Today dolls getting a new meet outfit every two years.
Right after Mattel brought Pleasant Company in 2000, the writing books with guides were discounted and Mattel started releasing new dolls to the line in 2001 with Number 21 being the first new one to release since the line was launched in 1995.
In 2004, the dolls of the line started to retire with numbers 9, 10, and 20 being the first dolls. Two years later in 2006, American Girl renamed the line to be called Just Like You and had a new purpose of encouraging people to see the dolls as a buddy or playmate that was just like them.
Under Just Like You, American Girl made multiple changes and came out with multiple additions to the line. In 2007, American Girl started making the bangs of different dolls finer, known as wispier bangs. In 2006, American Girl released Number 27 with attached earrings. In 2008, American Girl made her earrings removable and any doll in the Just Like You like could be modified to have pierced ears. In 2009, American Girl added a total of 29 new dolls to the line within the same year.
In 2010, American Girl renamed the line to My American Girl and launched Innerstar University which was an online virtual experience for dolls. Each My American Girl doll came with a pamphlet with a code and instructions for setting up an account. People could only access the website if they purchased a My American Girl doll. Besides a pamphlet, each doll came with a necklace that could hold charms from the My American Girl outfits. The whole purpose of the line still remained the same. In 2012, American Girl expanded the line to include hearing aids and Bald Dolls.
In 2015, the line was renamed Truly Me which the line is known as today. With the rename, Innerstar pamphlets and necklaces were discontinued and no longer sold with dolls. Instead, dolls came with an activity set that included idea cards for playtime, doll crafts, quizzes, and advice. In 2016, American Girl discontinued the activity sets when Truly Me dolls became available at Toys R Us. The dolls did not come with anything until 2019. In 2019, the dolls came with a paperback book of Friends: Making Them and Keeping Them. The dolls still came with this book today.
Under Truly Me, the line has been expanded to include more offerings and doll choices. In 2018, American Girl expanded the skin tone range and started making boy dolls. In 2020, American Girl started coming out with dolls that had "dyed hair" which featured fun colors like pink, blue, purple, etc. In 2021, American Girl released three new dolls as a part of the Truly Me Street Chic Collection. These dolls each had a different outfit, came with the same book as regular Truly Me dolls, had dyed hair, and had different meet accessories. In 2022, American Girl released a fourth doll with new meet accessories to this line.
In September of 2022, American Girl revamped the Truly Me line by releasing 25 new dolls, five new meet outfits and accessory packs, and a new book offering that the dolls come with. All of the Truly Me dolls that were available prior to this, was retired.
