Nellie O'Malley was released in 2004 for the celebration of Samantha's movie. Nellie was the first Best Friend doll to Historical Characters to be released. Nellie was the first doll to be retired in the Best Friend line in 2009. Nellie is currently not available for purchase from American Girl today.

"Coming from a poor family of Irish immigrants, Nellie has had to work from a young age. When she is hired to be a servant next door to Samantha Parkington's home, the two girls quickly become best friends. They live very different lives, but their friendship helps each other learn important lessons about themselves" (American Girl Ultimate Visual Guide 68).
