In 1997, American Girl released Josefina Montoya as the sixth Historical Character and as the first Latina character.

In 2014 as part of the BeForever launch American Girl, updated her meet outfits and gave her new items in her collection. In the Fall of 2019, American Girl cubed Josefina along with Kit Kittredge. Prior to this, American Girl slowly retired parts of her collection.

In May of 2021, American Girl rereleased Josefina in her original meet outfit, accessories, and book as a part of their 35th-anniversary collection. Josefina was the third doll to sell out by selling out on July 28th, 2021. Later in 2021, American Girl partnered with Carly Cushnie and released Josefina again, but this time into a modern doll.

In May of 2024, American Girl rereleased Josefina Montoya along with Addy Walker and Kirsten Larson. In this rerelease, American Girl brought Addy back in her original meet outfit, accessories, and Pleasant Company book. American Girl also rereleased her birthday outfit with corresponding book.

"Josefina lives on a New Mexican farm called a rancho. Ever since Mamá died, Josefina has tired to preserve her mother's traditions. But so much is changing! American traders arrive in new Mexico with new ideas. Josefina bravely faces these changes with hope" (American Girl Encyclopedia 16).

AMERICAN GIRL X CARLY CUSHNIE JOSEFINA

In the Fall of 2021, American Girl partnered with Carly Cushnie. With this partnership, all six of the original dolls were redesigned into modern dolls. Only one doll was made and auctioned through eBay.
